For decades, dental teams relied on heavy lead aprons like the one pictured here to shield patients from old-school film X-rays. Today, Fort Riley’s modern digital radiography has reduced radiation to such negligible levels that the heavy apron is no longer clinically necessary. With modern digital radiography, a routine X-ray emits less radiation exposure than a standard cross-country commercial flight.

Ditching the Heavy Vest

FORT RILEY, Kansas — Fort Riley Dental Clinics are phasing out the routine use of heavy lead aprons and thyroid collars during dental X-rays in accordance with guidelines from the American Dental Association and the Defense Health Agency.

Kansas native COL Jason K. Marquart expressed excitement to return to his home state and take command of Irwin Army Community Hospital. He outlined his priorities for the Fort Riley hospital, namely, the medical readiness of the 1st Infantry Division and taking care of the hospital’s people.

Kansas Native Takes Command of IACH

FORT RILEY, Kansas — IACH held a change of command ceremony June 25 where COL Laudino M. Castillo Rojas relinquished command to COL Jason K. Marquart, a Wichita, Kansas, native.

Two former combat medics, Sgt. Brent Kendall and Sgt. 1st Class Christopher Soria, graduated from the Army’s Interservice Physician Assistant Program (IPAP) on June 12, 2026, to become highly autonomous medical providers at the tactical edge. The rigorous 30-month program challenged them to transition from executing algorithmic trauma care to applying complex, critical diagnostic thinking. By choosing the Army PA route over traditional medical school, these graduates leveraged their prior military leadership to rapidly return to the operational force and serve as a medical authority for deployed Soldiers.

These upgrades ensure that soldiers injured in the field receive faster, more effective care, which increases the likelihood of a full return to duty.

Where Dental Students Can Impact National Security

FORT RILEY, Kansas — To address local dental shortages and military readiness challenges, Fort Riley leaders have partnered with the University of Missouri-Kansas City to offer clinical rotations to dental students. This initiative aims to recruit civilian dentists to both support the Fort Riley team and to establish practices in the underserved surrounding community.
