Information on Common STIs
Chlamydia
Chlamydia is an STI that can infect both men and women, though most people show no symptoms.
-
How it spreads: Unprotected vaginal, anal, or oral sex.
-
Symptoms in men: Burning sensation when urinating, discharge from the penis, or painful/swollen testicles.
-
Symptoms in women: Painful or burning sensation when urinating or abnormal vaginal discharge.
-
Important: About 75% of women and 50% of men with chlamydia will not have symptoms.
Gonorrhea
Gonorrhea is an STI that can infect the genitals, rectum, and throat. Many people, especially women, may not have any symptoms.
-
How it spreads: Unprotected vaginal, anal, or oral sex.
-
Symptoms in men: Burning sensation when urinating, a white, yellow, or green discharge from the penis, or (less commonly) painful/swollen testicles.
-
Symptoms in women: Painful or burning sensation when urinating or an increased vaginal discharge.
-
Note: Drug-resistant strains of gonorrhea are on the rise.
Syphilis
Syphilis is an STI that can cause serious, long-term health problems if left untreated.
-
How it spreads: Direct contact with a syphilis sore during vaginal, anal, or oral sex. It can also be spread from a mother to her unborn baby.
-
Important: Syphilis sores can be hidden in the vagina, anus, mouth, or under the foreskin, making them hard to notice.
HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus)
HIV is a lifelong virus that, if not treated, can lead to Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS).
-
How it spreads: Unprotected sex (vaginal, anal, or oral), sharing unsafe needles or syringes, or through blood transfusions.
-
Get informed: Before having sex with a new partner, discuss your sexual histories and consider getting tested for HIV and other STIs. Confidential counseling and education are available through Army Public Health Nursing.
Hepatitis C
Hepatitis C is a viral liver infection that can range from a mild, short-term illness to a serious, lifelong condition. Many people do not show symptoms.
-
How it spreads: The most common way is by sharing needles or syringes. It can also be spread during childbirth.
-
Less common ways it spreads: Needle stick injuries, sharing personal care items like razors, unprotected sex, or getting a tattoo or piercing in an unregulated setting.
-
Possible symptoms: Fever, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, dark urine, jaundice, and pain in the joints or abdomen.
