A Highly Preventable Disease for Women

Dr. Morgan Potter, an IACH OB/GYN physician, wishes she had seen some patients just a few years earlier before their abnormal cells turn cancerous. In this interview, she describes when women should get pap smears, how pelvic exams may be confused for pap smears, when women should get vaccinated, whether boys should get vaccinated, the effectiveness of HPV vaccine and/or condoms, whether pap smears are still needed for those vaccinated, and how she performs a pap smear.

Kansas City Too Big to Nurse

Kansas City was too big and impersonal for Brenda Waggoner so she moved to the Little Apple (i.e. Manhattan, KS) where she could practice nursing in a community hospital and give back to the men and women who selflessly serve the nation. Brenda shares with us what makes working at Irwin Army Community Hospital different from other places and what her goal is each day that she nurses the Fort Riley community. Nursing the One

Airica Forkom serves families who represent one percent of the U.S. population -- the active duty service member. Military families endure unique stressors resulting from multiple relocations, altered finances, changes in social support from family and friends, single parent roles, deployments and the concern for safety of their respective service member. Forkom has an affection for this population who makes the sacrifices that everyone else take for granted. 01:14 The average American does not understand the trials of military life. 03:19 The impact and privilege of caring for a Soldier's family. 04:16 Unique opportunities to grow as a nurse. Drop Scalpel, Grab SAW

After seeing their last patients, IACH's uniformed healthcare professionals traded medical instruments for weapons and a sterile environment for uneven terrain under the guise of gunfire. Medical Soldiers don't just wear the Army uniform, they train to deploy to austere environments where they are expected to provide life-saving applications. Here's a snapshot of weapons training, movement under fire, and other critical skills beyond what a civilian doctor, nurse, or technician would acquire in their respective fields. Prioritize Your Self

Life, work, and all its preoccupations kept Susie Mosier, an IACH registered nurse at the time, from getting a mammogram. It took the persistence of another nurse to get her to schedule the procedure. The results of the mammogram would change Susie's life and her perspective on self-care. Private Practice vs IACH Medicine

Reducing overhead and increasing cash flow are realities that can affect a doctor's ability to do what's best for the patient in private practice. Dr. Jeffery Long is an IACH OB/GYN physician who practiced in the civilian sector before he joined Irwin Army Community Hospital. For him, practicing at IACH frees him up to do what he loves -- care for patients. Creative commons music by Scott Buckley.

Restoring Desire to Live

Just like the civilian population, Soldiers struggle with different types of mental health challenges. Unlike civilians, Soldiers' anxieties, traumas, or bouts of depression are related to the demands of military life and the burdens placed on families. Dr. Joseph Carmona, an IACH behavioral health provider, describes what it means for him to help a Soldier through those difficulties. Creative commons music by Scott Buckley.
